From Plastic Waste to Possibility: Meet Jemima Silas!

Meet Jemima Silas, a student of Government Secondary School Nasarawa Bakoko, Calabar, Cross River State.

In SS1, Jemima was known as a bright and hardworking student, but one thing constantly discouraged her, she did not have a proper school bag.

She kept her books in an old, torn, and worn-out bag that looked very different from those of her classmates. Because of her family’s financial situation, getting a new school bag was simply out of reach.

At the same time, the area behind their classrooms was often filled with plastic sachet waste and PET bottles because of poor waste disposal practices.

Then Project Sustainphere visited their school in 2025, and everything changed.

Through our Plastic Waste for Education Initiative, Jemima was able to exchange collected plastic sachet waste for an eco-friendly school bag. What was once seen as useless waste became a tool for dignity, confidence, and access to education.

But the impact did not stop there.

Jemima and her classmates were also trained to become environmentally conscious students. They learned how to:

♻️ Convert PET bottles into storage containers for pencils and school supplies

♻️ Reuse waste materials creatively

♻️ Practice responsible waste management in their school and community

Today, Jemima carries her books with pride and confidence, and her classroom has become a place where students see waste not as a problem, but as an opportunity to create value.

A school bag may look small to many people, but for Jemima, it represented confidence, inclusion, and hope.
